Merritt Island: Earth and Space

picMany people don't realize, until they've actually been there, that the space shuttle takes off from the middle of a wildlife preserve. The Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge is officially an “overlay” of the Kennedy Space Center, and has been since 1963. At the Space Center, you see vultures landing outside the exhibit halls and alligators swimming in the pond in front of an office building. One of the tour bus drivers calls the 5000 gators an “unpaid security system” and says they're doing a good job. (They're also the only part of the security system you're...

Strangers in Florida

After only a couple of days in central Florida, we've seen a couple of kinds of exotic animals -- and I mean exotic, even for here. Tilapia, for example, which are restricted by the government, have been brought in to control the algae in a pond near where we're staying. We saw two large males hovering over round nests hollowed out of the sand in the shallows. Well, we didn't know at the time that they were males, but after looking at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission site, I realized they must...

Entertain Your Cat

picLike dogs, cats are often playful creatures, especially during their younger years. Cats are often known for their hunting instincts, and they like to incorporate that into their play. Play also burns energy and decreases stress and unwanted behavior. If you have a pet cat, you might look into adopting another one (preferably close in age), so your cat has another friend.  If you do decide to play with your cat, be careful as their playtime can often leave you scratched or bitten. When you do play with your cat, try to keep it twice a day for 10 or 15...

More Beta Fish Thoughts

picI'm a straightforward kind of guy. My tastes are simple. I like things that are cheap and easy. [Insert your own misogynist joke here.] That's why, of all the pets that my family members have brought home, Lily the beta fish is my favorite. Beta fish are cheap, both to acquire and to care for. My eight year old son "won" Lily at a carnival by throwing a ping pong ball into a glass bowl. Even with the requisite bowl, starter kit, fish food, and "Beware of Jaws" sign, we got her home for a...

Do Cats Prefer Running Water?

A cat owners’ newsletter recently informed me that cats prefer to drink running water – that they may not even drink enough to stay healthy if their only choice is to use a bowl. I decided that, before I started feeling guilty or rushed out to buy a pet drinking fountain, I’d see if it was true of our cats. I took the pump and spout from our tabletop fountain, set them in a bowl of water on the kitchen floor, and plugged in the cord. The sound of running water is supposed to attract cats, but neither one of them showed...
