Anchovies, Pizza Crust, and a Fresh Worm

Chickens

As chickens grow, up you can expand their diet slightly. This expansion can include human table scraps, but there are certain items that you want to avoid, such as too much pasta or rice since their stomachs will expand as they eat that.

At the Kuegler mini-farm, the first items of human food were fed to the chickens this week and almost everything was a huge hit! Pizza crusts were exceptionally popular, as were lavash bread and whole anchovies (TK loves anchovies). Other things were less popular, such as broccoli stems and carrots. Also this week I dug up a few worms for them and flung them into the pen. The wiggly Lumbricus terrestris were quickly gobbled up as the “girls” fought over them!

Another great healthy week for the chickens as they continue to grow into full “chickenhood”.

I can’t believe how quickly they grew into adult chickens! Any update on your chicken escape artist?

The days are long, but the years are short. Make sure you enjoy your little darlings while you can!

Of course, you can always go order another couple dozen now that the first set of girls is growing up, so that you can relive their childhood.

Although the thought of a dozen more chicks is wonderful, we want to enjoy this group for now. I want to ensure that this group gets plenty of individual attention.

As for our escape artist, she is quite content to stay in her outdoor pen. Plus, TK has not been allowed to take them on any field trips, so they’re safety has not been at risk.

    Hi Tom,

Since they seem to love the worms so much, perhaps you could start a compost/worm farm. I hear it’s easy and it kills two birds (so to speak) with one stone.

Nearly all table scraps can be tossed in (worms ain’t fussy). The chickens will love them and when the worms are done, you’ll have some great compost to help keep your flowers and garden blooming.

See Red Worm Composting for some ideas on how this is done.
