Betta Fish

Around last June, I received a Betta fish as a gift. Now, I’m not a big fan of fish, but I figured that I could take care of it. Well, it’s still alive and well! I never expected it to live this long.

At first, it started off its life at my house in a small fishbowl. There were a couple rocks at the bottom of the bowl, but other than that my fish could pretty much only do circles around its tail. I looked up information about taking care of the fish and learned that they didn’t really need plants or anything like that because they have special organs that allow them to intake oxygen from the surface. There has been much debate about whether or not betta fish should be kept in small bowls/tanks. Some people keep them in vases or small cups as center pieces; other people buy large elaborate tanks for their betta fish. In any case, a family friend stayed at my house for a week and saw my fish’s bowl. To make a long story short, she thought that what I was doing to my fish was animal cruelty and bought it a bigger tank.

Betta fish can live in poor water conditions, but they won’t thrive. A happy fish will be so colorful. Betta fish are beautiful fish, and they do not require much care. You only have to feed them a small amount once a day or even every other day. I got a small bag of pellets last year for $8, and I am still using them to feed my fish! Some people treat their betta fish very well and feed their fish live or frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia.

And although I’m not allowed to bring pets such as my cat to college next year, I can take my fish!
