The bullmastiff is a cross between a bulldog and the large mastiff. Although not as big as a mastiff, it is still a powerful dog. A male can reach 130 pounds by maturity and a female reaches about 100 pounds. It a natural watchdog; reliable, fearless and courageous. The bullmastiff looks frightening and has the physical capability to take down an intruder. Yet, if socialized correctly, the bullmastiff is friendly, loyal and gentle with its family members, children and other non-threatening visitors.
Originally bred to be a gamekeeper’s dog on English estates, the bullmastiff is an excellent dog companion for families that have some fenced land, are around the house a great deal and love to walk their dog. It would be a mistake for an apartment dweller or for a family that was gone all the time to own a bullmastiff.
The bullmastiff’s intelligence is unique. It has an ability to tell a “good person” from a “threatening person.” It learns words easily, quickly responding to commands when trained properly through repetition and treats. On the other hand, a bullmastiff gets bored easily, and even an adult dog, if left alone in the house for long periods may chew through a table leg or rip apart an upholstered chair.
If considering a bullmastiff as a dog for your family then go to local dog shows and observe the breed. Consider how massive and strong they are. If you are interested in obtaining a bullmastiff, and it is appropriate for your situation, then get the names of reputable breeders from owners at the dog show. Then, make sure that the dog you buy is free from inherited physical defects. Large dogs have some physical problems and a good breeder will not sell dogs that show signs of these defects.
