From Allergens to Alligators: Pets in the News This Summer

September 1st, 2010 — by Jane Wangersky
Pets have been at the center of some surprising, even alarming, news stories this summer. I'm not just talking about the woman who trapped the cat in the garbage bin -- though that story draws attention to the indoor vs. outdoor cat question. (Strangely enough, the woman's mother says her daughter loves cats, but the family is having a hard time, and maybe she just snapped.)

*This one is important: The FDA says Evamist, a hormone spray used by menopausal women, can be harmful to pets who lick it off their owners' arms or just pick it up on their

Are You Ready To Volunteer At A Pet Shelter?

August 27th, 2010 — by Anna P.
You don't have to own a cat or dog to make a big difference in the life of an animal. Yes, there are rescue groups for just about any kind of animal

At least 185 exotic fish species have been found in U.S. waters, says the U.S. Geological Survey, and over half of those species got there through “release or escape of aquarium fishes”. Lots of people, apparently, have been slipping their unwanted pet fish into the

Speaking Out for Pit Bulls

March 2nd, 2010 — by Jane Wangersky
Pit bulls have a bad reputation, but is it deserved? A group of pit bull owners and advocates in Vancouver, Canada, says the breed has been misrepresented.

HugABull Advocacy & Rescue Society works to help not only individual dogs, but the entire breed’s image. It also strives to build a community of responsible owners for dogs who often attract the wrong kind.

Many of us have the idea that pit bulls have been bred to be aggressive – and, though they can’t help it, they’re not the kind of dog you’d want to have around. News reports and breed-specific legislation, like
