Over the years I’ve adopted many pets, from rabbits to parakeets; however, one of my favorite pet rescues was a skittish cat named Zena. I had Zena for four short (wonderful) years, and only now, 22 years later, am I finally able to talk about her.
While attending college, I found Zena at a rescue agency, and I decided to take her home. She was tiny, yet the woman at the shelter told me Zena was almost a year old. She had been abused, and she was frightened of all humans. In fact, no one wanted to adopt this standoff-ish

Cats – A Woman’s Best Friend?
by Lori S. September 6th, 2011 | Cats
If a dog is man’s best friend, is a cat a woman’s best friend? In my case, I say yes! Cats, with their playful nature, as well as their unpredictable aloofness, exemplify the perfect pet companion. Of course there will be some who disagree with me, yet the following five reasons best describe why cats just may be woman’s best friend.
1. The Magic Purr
I know that purring doesn’t always signal pleasure in a cat; it may mean the cat feels threatened just as easily as it means they love your company; however, who can deny that a beloved cat,

I Survived Bear’s Vet Visit
by Lori S. August 18th, 2011 | Cats
A few weeks ago, my six-year-old cat, Bear, began acting funny. He wouldn’t move from the easy chair, he wouldn’t eat, and he wouldn’t drink. Basically, he just wanted to sleep. I worried myself sick for two days, wondering if I should take him to the vet’s office. Of course I feared the worst. I thought he either had feline leukemia, or that he had been infected with an illness from the fox living in the woods surrounding our house.
On the third morning of his sickness, I called to schedule a vet appointment. Bear somehow knew what I was

Animal Cruelty: A New Dimension
by Lori S. August 9th, 2011 | Animal Rescue Groups, Cats
There’s a new activity taking place that should horrify animal lovers everywhere – kittens being tossed from cars onto highways in and around the city of New Orleans. My son, a college student there, first alerted me that this was going on, and I didn’t want to believe it; however, a quick search of Internet news sites proves that it is, indeed, happening.
One question I have - how can people be so heartless and cruel? In years gone by, I have heard about people taking unwanted kittens and dumping them in the country, or about others who place them

Petcentric.com: A Great Website
by Lori S. July 20th, 2011 | Cats
Being a lover of cats, I enjoy reading anything and everything I can about them. In fact, my first book as a child focused on a very special cat, Katie. In the book, Katie the Kitten, by Kathryn and Byron Jackson, Katie goes on all sorts of adventures. She snaps at a fly, hops after a frog, fights with her shadow, and sniffs a daisy. In the end, she drinks enough milk to make her tummy full, and she falls asleep in an old hat…purring.
