Chickens and Grits?

Chickens

Having chickens, we have learned that they are similar to garbage disposals.  Watermelon rinds?  They will eat them.  Remnants of a flax seed wrap?  They would love that, too.  Stale crackers?  Oh my gosh, these are a coop favorite!

Last weekend, we had no kids at home, so we started Saturday with a lazy breakfast of eggs, sausage, grits, pears, and mimosas.  When I was transferring the grits to the baking dish, I decided to save a little for the “girls”.  Because the grits were still wet, I poured them into 2 small dishes before placing them in the pen.

Standing in the doorway to watch, I needed to step back quickly.  The chickens loved the grits, but each time one of the ladies took a bite, she would stand up and shake her beak.  Grits went flying everywhere!

The grits were devoured in no time.  I think crackers have been replaced with grits as the new favorite food.

Let the eating begin!

I never knew they liked grits. We used to feed our chickens stale bread and whatever other leftovers we had. They’d eat it all.

This is hysterical. I just did the same thing yesterday. Mine were wiping their beaks on the grass. Mmmmm, grits.
