Last week’s article was about dog walking, so here is a sister article about running with your dog!
As for what type of dog is the best dog to run with, I really cannot help you decide that. Some dogs have the personality to run, while others do not. Some have the ability to run, while others do not. For instance, I can’t imagine beagles or pit bulls as good running partners. However, golden retrievers, Dobermen, greyhounds, and more do seem like viable choices. It all comes down to your preference.
What I can offer you is some advice for running with your dog. First of all, know your dog’s limits. If your dog is struggling to stay with you, start to walk, or turn back. Even though you may not get your mileage in, it isn’t worth hurting your family pet or best friend. Try not to run in extreme temperatures. If it is hot outside, try to run in the shade. Also, always have a source of water for your dog–dogs do need more water than humans do! Another idea is to run on soft terrain, you don’t want to hurt your dog’s joints! This could have positive influences for your joints as well.
Running with a dog is a fun activity to do. It provides a source of exercise for you and your dog. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle for your dog is very important. As for running with your dog, it may take some practice at first. For many dogs, it will take a while to train your dog to stay by your side on a leash because many like to explore their surroundings. With patience, you can train your dog to stay with you and potentially even let him/her off of the leash!
Happy running!
