Entertain Your Cat

picLike dogs, cats are often playful creatures, especially during their younger years. Cats are often known for their hunting instincts, and they like to incorporate that into their play. Play also burns energy and decreases stress and unwanted behavior. If you have a pet cat, you might look into adopting another one (preferably close in age), so your cat has another friend.  If you do decide to play with your cat, be careful as their playtime can often leave you scratched or bitten.

When you do play with your cat, try to keep it twice a day for 10 or 15 minute sessions. Try to keep it on a routine basis when your cat is most playful and when you have time. You can easily entertain your kitten or cat with a variety of items around the house- just check to make sure that the items are safe to use and won’t harm your cat. Some of these items include milk rings (the little plastic rings wrapped around a jug of store bought milk or orange juice), flashlights, plush animals, and rolled up socks and will keep your cat happy and content. You also can purchase toys for your pet at almost any grocery or chain store.

If you have room for it, an indoor cat tree or cat tower would be an excellent idea. Many of these the playhouse have plush carpeting, tunnels, and resting spots for your cat to enjoy (or occasionally nap in). When purchasing one, you want to check the sturdiness of it and also find out how much weight it can hold- which is crucial with multiple cats.

Remember these few things: No matter what toys you give to your cat, always check them often for any signs of loose or broken pieces, unraveled strings, or anything else that doesn’t look safe. Don’t be afraid to ask your vet for advice on playtime and toys.
