Fish are Friends, Not Food

Cats, Fish

In my last article, I talked about my dogs. Now, I’ll be sharing a story about my cat named Homer.

“Fish are friends, not food.” I always remember this line from the movie Finding Nemo. This is the motto of the shark named Bruce in the movie. Now, I’m wondering if Homer follows this motto, too.

I have an aquarium at home with lots of goldfish. Homer and my other cat named Sidney are staying in a spare room at home. Everyday, I let them out of their room to play with me in our living room. Every time I open their bedroom door, Homer runs toward the aquarium and climbs on top of it. At first, the fishes were afraid of him because they would hide behind the rocks in the aquarium, but as the days went by, they eventually learned to like Homer. Every time Homer climbs on the aquarium, he dips his face in the water, and the fish will swim up to touch his nose as if they were kissing him. Homer had all the opportunity to grab and eat the fish but he did not do it anyway; he just likes to play with the fish. What he likes most is when he dips his whiskers in the water, the fish will nibble them. He likes it so much. I don’t know what has gotten into him, but everyday he dips his whiskers in the water and lets the fish bite or nibble them. It looks funny, but I find it sweet. Maybe this is his way to entertain himself as Sidney sometimes doesn’t want to play with him.

Dipping his whiskers in the aquarium became a daily routine for Homer. As he does this everyday, I feel like there’s a friendship growing between Homer and the fish! The fish are not hiding behind the rocks anymore. Instead, they swim up to the surface of the water every time they see Homer on the aquarium as if they are happy to see Homer back again. Now, this is what I call “Friendship”…isn’t it?

  1. What a cute story (and what an adorable kitty)! I’m not sure things would go so well for the fish if my cats had that opportunity though.

  2. Parker says:

I can’t say that I would be as “friendly”!
