Even though summer doesn’t officially begin until next week, the warmth of summer has arrived. To keep ourselves cool we utilize many strategies: using fans, running air conditioning, drinking lots of water, relaxing in pools. These are great ways to cool ourselves, but what about our dogs?
Last summer we published a two-part article with many tips and suggestions to help keep your dog cool. This summer we decided to look at a different way to make our dogs feel refreshed. As people, we often enjoy an icy cold beverage or a frozen juice pop to cool ourselves. Why not find treats that our dogs can enjoy and that will keep them cool?
The next time the temperatures soar, offer one of these to your favorite canine:
1. SweetSpots
Create by Nature’s Variety, these are frozen ice cream treats for dogs. As you may be aware, human ice cream isn’t a good treat for your dog because of the lactose. According to their website, “SweetSpots is much different than human ice cream – it is a frozen dessert made from low lactose dairy ingredients, moderate levels of natural sweeteners (like molasses and honey), and fortified with probiotics for better digestive health.” With two flavors, sweet potato & molasses and peanut butter & honey, they are sure to be popular with your dog.
2. Dogzilla Deep Freeze
This treat and toy in one combines all of the great features of the original Dogzilla rubber with ice to fully engage dogs in a fun and chilly way. And, this wonderful combination comes in its own tray so freezing is quick and easy! Freeze water, chicken broth, and treats! Two styles are available: the Deep Freeze Arctic Bone and the Deep Freeze Arctic Pop. Both are offered in medium, large and extra large sizes to appeal to any size and type of dog. A toy and icy treat all in one- what dog could resist?
3. Frozen Kong
If you are a dog owner, then you most likely have given your dog a rubber Kong as a toy at some point. You also may have put treats inside the Kong, either as a game or a reward. Kent Kruger of SitStay recommends making it into a summer toy. All you need to do is fill the Kong with peanut butter (and treats, if desired) and freeze. Your dog will enjoy a chilly and fun to eat treat.
