picWhether you’re doing a temporary move or taking a vacation, finding the right pet sitter should be considered a priority. Like most pet owners, you consider your dog or cat to be family. And you wouldn’t leave your child to just anyone, so why would you leave your pet to an acquaintance?  Before you ask someone to pet sit for you, here are a few ideas to help you find the right pet sitter.

- Don’t look to Craigslist or any other classified. Most often, the people who post on Craigslist are strangers, and it just wouldn’t be wise to leave your pet with them.

- Does the sitter really like animals? Sure your Aunt Linda loves little puppies, but would she really be willing to take care of a large dog for two weeks? Try to find someone who has pets or has had them in the past. And make sure that they truly like the cat or dog they will babysit.

- Pay well. Unless it’s a really close relative who refuses to take a penny for this, make sure you can agree on paying them well. Also consider the cost of food, litter, toys, and the other items they may have to buy while sitting the animal.

- Give them your phone number just in case of emergencies.

- Consider a contract that you could agree on. Make sure that you both read, agree, and sign it.

- Make a list of important info about your pet like allergies, vet information, and pet medications. Make sure you have an adequate supply of pet medications if necessary. And don’t forget to tell your vet about the arrangement.

- Make sure the pet sitter knows where you are, and let them know when you’ll be back.

- Decide whether your pet will stay home or not. Remember cats can stay on their own for awhile, but dogs cannot. But if you leave your pet at home, make sure the sitter comes in everyday to give your cat food, clean the litter box, and entertain your cat for awhile.
