Confession of a Former Anti-Reptilian

by Michele October 13th, 2011 | Reptiles
Five years ago, my then 10 year old son requested having some sort of a reptile as a pet.  I agreed to this with a certain amount of hesitation.  You see, I have a huge fear of snakes, and while I don't fear lizards, I also find them unnerving.  However, my son made a case for the acquisition of this new pet, and I decided to find a way to make this work.

Hamster Mania

by Lori S. June 21st, 2011 | Animal Health, Mammals, Pet Adoption, Various Pets
“They may be small, but these little guys are BIG on personality. Do you have what it takes to be a hamster pet parent?” ASPCA

by Jane Wangersky March 15th, 2011 | Dogs
Last time, we looked at how Pauli Reading uses dogs to teach positive character traits to schoolchildren. I asked her how parents might be able to use some of her ideas with their kids and the family dog, so this week dog-owning families are going to benefit from her experience.

Its so important for kids to understand things like responsibility and respect for all living creatures, both of which can be learned via pet ownership. As a precautionary reminder, when you decide to let your child adopt a cat or dog, make sure that they are old enough to take responsible ownership. They need to realize that a living creature is not something you can just play with and put up for the rest of the day.

Preventing Dog Bites

The image of a dog furiously chasing a mailman is old, tired, clichéd – and based firmly on fact. The three groups of people most commonly bitten by dogs are children, the elderly, and postal employees, in that order.

So it’s not surprising that the U.S. Postal Service takes an active part in National Dog Bite Prevention Week. (It’s May 16th to 22nd this year.)

The Post Office has some tips for everyone on how to prevent dog bites.

If you think a dog is possibly about to attack you:

· Don’t run
· Don’t scream
· Don’t make eye contact
· Stay motionless and wait for the dog
