What’s Up, Dog?

by Lori S. September 1st, 2011 | Dogs
While I tried to brainstorm a topic for this week’s article, I felt very uncomfortable. The humidity and heat of late August seemed to disrupt my thought process. Sweat ran down my back, I needed water, and I just wanted a breeze to kick up and cool me off.

“Why do we have to suffer through the dog days of summer,” I thought.

It was a miracle! I had my topic –- write about dog references. I hope you learn as much from reading this article about familiar “dog” words/phrases as I did while writing it.

Leave the Fan on for the Pets?

by Lori Teller DVM DABVP CVJ August 3rd, 2011 | Ask the Vet
Should I turn on an electric fan for the pets when they're home alone on a hot day?

While we are in the dog days of summer, an electric fan may certainly help keep your pets cooler. Gracie is the household's new grouch. You would not expect a dog to be the downer in the family, but apparently this pooch had made it her goal to do so this summer. No one quite knows why. She is usually loyal to my mother and my mother is one of the few who can take her games, but recently, Gracie has been snappy.

We think that it's due to the heat wave that is currently going on. She cannot even be brought out on runs a lot of the time because it gets too hot out for her. Sometimes,

Ice Cream for Cats?

by Michele July 21st, 2011 | Ask the Vet
With the high temperatures, I would love to give my cat a cool treat.  I contemplated giving her ice cream, but I thought I had read it wasn't ok.  What can I give her to keep her cool?

Ice cream is not a good treat for cats for a couple of reasons:

  • As kittens grow into adulthood, they frequently lose the ability to digest lactose and may actually become lactose-intolerant (just like people). Thus, ice cream can lead to gassiness, bloat, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

  • Ice cream also contains a lot of sugar. With >30% of cats being greatly overweight or outright

Pet Adoption Hits the Road

by Lori S. July 14th, 2011 | Animal Rescue Groups, Dogs, Pet Adoption
Local farmers' markets are great places to pick up fresh produce, gorgeous flowers, delectable baked goods, curious crafts, and even seafood; however, many markets now offer dogs for as well. Yes, you read that correctly – dogs are now available for adoption at farmer’s markets.

Why? Because animal shelters and rescue groups are becoming increasingly creative about marketing dogs and cats for adoption. These groups strive to go to where potential pet owners congregate, including the market mentioned above. They are also going to malls and to a variety of businesses. You may remember that a few weeks ago, I
